The Ukrainian Armed Forces garrison in Kurakhovo may be blocked from the north, and the "Rabotinsky salient" has been practically eliminated! By Marat Khairullin with illustrations by Mikhail Popov.
Russia seems to be advancing at least 1 km per day across the frontline. At this rate how soon can we expect the Russians to push the Ukrainians to the left side of the Dneiper?
It's impossible to predict. Success cannot be measured in km, because the AFU may be able to hold out in some areas, but then they suddenly break and a crescendo of failures across the frontline causes them to fall back dramatically. It's not as simple as "X km per day."
The problem is that some areas have multiple names. Sometimes, a Russian and a Ukrainian name. And in some cases an old Russian, new Russian, and Ukrainian name.
As I remember the first three on your last post. I could not locate any of them. Yes I am aware of the different name thing and I keep it in mind when looking.
I'm also aware of different maps having different places shown. I use Sasplanet and I find the best map it offers for number of places shown is google hybrid hd ru.
I look for borders and notable road features and rivers - I really try. :_
If Mikhail could perhaps just put a little 'thumbnail' map with dots on it showing the locations of the areas his bigger maps cover I at least would find it a big help.
Your coverage is good and his maps are good: in fact you're both great and this is getting to be my favourite place to come for updates.
There are so few.
If you know of some that are really informative please tell.
A big thing for me is the Kursk thing, for instance.
I simply cannot understand it. For weeks maybe months now we've been told we are pounding the hell out of them there and most especially down their logistic chain: down to Sumy and all around.
We have destroyed ammo dumps, troop concentrations, armour, HQ's and I don't know what else. Everything.
And there is really only one hard road from Sumy to the incursion zone. And the front along the border is only 30km long anyway. Not a great width to have to monitor.
And we have air supremacy and can and do fly helicopters: Ka-52, Mi-28's ?
And plenty of drones and drone operators?
And the latest military satellite got launched and is working well?
And the dills are really so worn down that they had to take needed units from the Donbas and send them to Kursk?
Then how come they are still pressing the attack in Kursk? How come they pushed us back from Malaya Loknya again?
Where are their supplies coming from? What is happening?
I know there is a very strict blackout on reports from the front but we get some that are supposedly authoritative: Alaudinov, Two Majors, Colonel Cassad, but they don't tell us.
Alaudinov says they are 'hunting' the dills. Giving us the idea its nearly all over and they're just chasing these few desperate units around, digging them out of the forests.
But pushing us back 10km from Malaya Loknya is not 'hunting them around' is it? It sounds more like the other way around.
So how about some true reporting of the nature of the warfare there and an explanation for the apparent inconsistencies ? Would you be able to get something like that together?
I know of no one else who has or is doing it.
Sorry to hit you with such a long reply and thank you for getting back to me. I'm obviously taking advantage of this little chance to have some input to one our few good sources. Hope you don't mind. :)
You wrote a lot about Kursk, but you still haven't given me a location that you're having trouble finding, so I don't know how to help you there. Could you be more specific of which areas you are having trouble finding?
As for Kursk, the Ukrainians have lost tens of thousands of men and 1/3rd to 1/2 of the territory they once held. They can keep sending floods of men and equipment in, but that's hardly a position of strength. So what is the inconsistency in the reporting?
I thought I was clear enough. The locations of maps one, two and three I could not identify. What more can I say? Should I list every place name on each of those maps?
Kursk. The inconsistency is in Malaya Loknya changing hands so often.

i cannot identify some of the areas on my maps. (google hybrid). A bit of an overall location key would be good. what maps are you using?

Mr. Popov does a great job - old bush pilot here.
