I have a great deal of respect for you Marat, but I have to take issue with this. Populism- ie democracy, is not the problem in the west. There are many problems here, one of which is the perversion of language. Some groups, mainly liberals, have taken to decrying their perceived social enemies as "populists". For an idea or proposed policy to be populist, it must be held by a majority of the population. Should this majority be able to make a decision collectively to implement this idea or policy, then you would have a democratic decision. In the west, to take a particular facet of the USA as an example, the liberals decry Trump supporters as "populists", but this is NOT the case. Trump supporters, to the extend that they will cast a ballot for Trump, are not a majority. Only 60% of adults that are able to register to vote do actually register. Of that registered 60%, in the last election, less than 60% actually turned out to vote. The election was a squeaker- you might as well say that it was 50/50. So, leaving aside that many voters held their noses and voted for the candidate they thought would be the least destructive, 60% of 60% is 36%. Roughly half of that 36% voted for Trump, meaning 18% actually voted for him (or the brain-dead alternative). Even if we assume that the entire 18% were actual full-on Trump supporters, 18% is nowhere near a majority. In the US, this 18% is the sector of society decried as "populists". These people are no more a majority than your doom and gloom war commentators, and a minority does not a populist position, make.
Populist decisions have never, ever been made in the US (at least not since 1787, in any case). Distorting language by calling conservatives "populists" is as retarded as calling liberals "communists". Saying something does not make it true.
Is populism a bad thing? - I say: Who the fuck knows? Because populism/democracy have never actually been tried, and anytime anyone has tried, the oligarchs of the day line up to crush the attempt.
Adding- there are many other problems in the west. This is just one of them, and I used the example because it relates to populism, and how the word is being abused. Another example is Artificial Intelligence- All AI amounts to is automated theft of the intellectual output of others. Using "AI", corporations get to protect their intellectual property, while using an algorithm to steal the intellectual property of others. The funny part is that this strategy does not work, because language, science, communication, and politics are so corrupted int he west. Any published information trawled by these algorithms is a mix of high quality truth, and rotten bullshit, and the fact that the algorithm contains no actual intelligence makes it unable to discriminate between fact and fiction in the dataset it is stealing from. Our willingness to swallow lies, our destroyed education system that prevents us from discerning truth, our desire to be accepted by our social group which causes us to ape the beliefs of our peers/betters, and our utter exhaustion due to widespread household collapse into the financial abyss, all keep us from being able to stand up en masse and denounce the bombardment of bullshit and propaganda that rains down upon us all.
Well, he talking about populism in the individual sense,
I misconstrued it too until I read the sentence that says the individual with his objective situation, complaining to get followers to agree with him that the day is bad for him i.e. He gains populism..
In the western sense populism Coming from the progressive liberal has all kinds of adjectives xenophobic even Nazism when it’s just caring about once country and culture as opposed to the liberal progressive idea.
The West is declining, and what always happens to every empire when it rots, like a parasite it kills the host which is why I think trying to use any words to describe where we are as a society in general is an exercise in fultility.
All I can add is this nonsense has been going on for decades. Unfortunately people in general have literally lost their ability to think through anything as it takes time and effort. We have been dumbed down so horribly over time we belieive in fantasies and illusion. Absolutely bereft of any reality. That's how control works feeding them BS. The ruling elite and systems these monsters have put in place should be eradicated once and for all.
Totally disagree that "populism is exactly what is currently destroying the West in general". Current populism in the west is a reaction to decades of neolib or neocon excess, whether it has been #MeToo, monetary policy, endless immigration, DEI, endless wars, or the grotesque rainbow colors of sexual deviancy that now make June a whole month of 'celebration' and Pride.
And that's why we have Reform in the UK, Sverige Demokratarna in Sweden, Front National in France, AfD in Germany and a whole raft of others finally trying to put an end to the obscenity of our totally corrupt governments.
"decades of neolib or neocon excess" across the West IS populism by definition.
Multiple cons played on the people to make the new neoliberal policies "popular" and for the benefit of the important people -- the middle classes and others so they kept winning elections (Blair, Clinton, Bush Cheney, Obama, Trump, Biden, Macron, Merkle or Scholtz (both used Populism) and all over the western world)
Large Tax cuts on the Rich - all Popular acts and neoliberal Govts got re-elected to do it!
The IRAQ War was Popular as was the invasion of Afghanistan! And the bombing of Libya, and Yugoslavia, riots and murder in Maidan, all popular events. All Populism being played on the "democratic voters" -
When he said "populism in the West", I think he meant Obama and "yes we can". As well as all other measures done by "the Left". But I suppose "the Right" isn't non-populistic either.
